do you have The courage to make a difference?

The Anchorage Police Department (APD) is the largest police department in Alaska, serving a population of roughly 301,000 in a service area encompassing 195 square miles. There are several specialized officer units including Canine, Special Weapons and Tactics, Negotiations Team, Bomb Team, School Resource Officers, Crisis Intervention Team, Traffic Unit, Crime Scene Team, and the Community Action Policing Team. APD also has several specialty detective units; APD’s Homicide Unit has been nationally recognized for its techniques and high solvability rate.

What does it take to become a police officer?

If you have the following qualities, you might be a great fit for APD:

  • Unquestionable character and integrity

  • Free of cultural and ethnic bias

  • Strong ethical code in both personal and professional life

  • Desire to diligently protect and serve the community through courage, compassion, and respect

  • Personal conduct above reproach

Do you want to make a difference…

But don’t want to carry a badge and a gun? APD has many opportunities for non-sworn personnel in several units throughout the department. From taking emergency calls and dispatching officers, to helping people with records requests to processing evidence, there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes.

“There's a lot of people, they live in a bubble. They don't really see all the stuff that goes on, and they don't see what people do to each other. It's my job to help maintain that bubble. I'll go out and deal with it so they don't have to."
